Central Banker might not pose much of a threat, but Al Stall thinks otherwise
Trained by Albert Stall Jr. for owners Klaravich Stables, Inc, and Lawrence, William H, Central Banker, could be ignored in the odds column ahead of his start in the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot on 17 November, 2012, despite defeating the eventual Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Sprint winner, Hightail.
The 2-year-old bay colt by Speightstown, Central Banker failed to make an impact in his debut race for his connections when he finished third in a Maiden Special Weight race at Saratoga on 3 August, 2012.
Third in his first attempt, Central Banker made amends and bounced back to win a Maiden Special Weight race in second attempt, and went on to defeat the eventual Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint winner, Hightail in second, also at Saratoga.
With 2 victories in 4 starts, Central Banker will be seeking his third career victory in the $1 million event, while will be run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles, while Hightail is also expected to run in the Jackpot, and it will be a feast to see these two battling it out once again, with Hightail gaining much recognition than his rival.
Out of Go for Gin mare Rhum, Central Banker lost his only stakes race attempt, when he finished second in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes at Kentucky Downs on 15 September, but he got himself in the Jackpot picture by winning the six and a half furlongs long Allowance Optional Claimer at Churchill Downs on 28 October.
“He ran so well going back to the dirt,” said trainer Al Stall Jr. “He was always a winner, the second the doors opened.”
Under rider, Rosie Napravnik, Central Banker was fifth in a field of five runners, but spurted through, and launched a bold bid five wide. The duo reeled in the leader near the final furlong and posted his second career victory, and earning a career high Beyer Speed Figure of 83.
Central Banker will be making his two turn debut in the Jackpot, and his trainers have reasons that he will have a good trip at Delta Downs.
“Rosie said he wasn’t pulling hard down the backside last time,” Stall said. “He just was in control perfectly, and that kind of tells me he’ll help himself going further.”
