At stumps on the third day of play in the four-day game between Central Districts and Otago, the latter have posted 237 for eight, in their second innings, after they failed to avoid a follow on at McLean Park, Napier.
Central Districts have a firm command in the match as they dominated their opposition by smashing a brilliant score of 476 in their first innings.
This was the breaking point in the match as had Otago succeeded in halting their opposition from reaching this mammoth score, things might have been a bit different.
Now it was imperative for Otago to bat as well as their opponents to beat their lead, while at the same time, Central Districts knew that they could not afford to be complacent to see the game slip out of their hands.
The day began with Otago resuming their first innings from 232 for nine. This was a pressuring situation for them as it was only a matter of time before their innings would finally come to an end as they had their last pair fighting for survival in the middle.
The batting pair of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Butler-c48850 stayed unbeaten on a handsome knock of 73.
AF Milne, from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Central-Districts-c777 was outstanding as he nabbed five wickets in 14 overs.
Forced to a follow on, Otago had a ruthless start with openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AJ-Redmond-c963 and HD Rutherford forging a stand of 120 runs.
The phenomenal pair saw its last when Rutherford was dismissed by Mathieson for 55 off 104 deliveries.
The fielding side made a strong comeback by nabbing another wicket in the next over when Cachopa had Redmond for 57 runs. At the time of this dismissal the batting side had piled 122 runs.
The middle-order partnership between MG Bracewell and NT Broom was not effective as the duo only took the score to 136 before Bracewell became the third wicket to fall after he had scored 12 runs.
With SR Wells doing most of the scoring, his partnership wtih NT Broom took the score to 162 before this pair also met its demise.
Wells’ 24, DC de Boorder’s 28 and MD Craig’s unbeaten 20-run knock helped Otago reach 237 at stumps.
