I am very interested in going to Central Michigan University in the fall of 2009, and joining a sorority. I have done some research and I realize that to join a sorority you have to have a lot of activities under your belt and be involved a lot. Does anyone know how I can start now? I've thought about this a lot and I know it's what I want. If anyone knows anything about Centrals Greek Life, or if anyone can help me out at all, it would be greatly appreciated!

Also, please, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all! Thanks!

I will chose best answer too!!

  1. Don't do it.     I am A CMU grad of 1995.  Get involved in the clubs that you plan to major in.  That will mean 100% more to your future employers than being in a sorority.  Trust me.  I now hire college grads and with today's economy you need to have that extra edge in your chosen field. If I see a resume that says "Secretary of Delta Delta Delta" and then see one that says, "Secretary of marketing club"  I am much more willing to pass on the latter resume.  Why?  Because clubs in a select field tend to do stuff and are orientated toward said field vs a bunch of girls living together and looking cute.

This isn't meant to be mean - it's the reality of the real world.

  2. Hi!  I have an almost opposite response to the other CMU grad.  If I see on someone's resume that they were a member of a fraternity or sorority, I can almost count on them being a team player.  Unless there were misspellings or grammatical errors, I've always given at least a first interview to all greek members.

I don't really know the CMU scene but do know the Michigan scene.  Your grades are what you should focus on primarily.  If you're into any sports, aim for some type of leadership position.  Same thing with the other activities you might already be involved in.

Another tip is that if you feel you might be a little under achieving in regards to your activities portion of your resume is to consider enrolling at CMU in the summer 2009; you'll have the chance to join some summer clubs as well as become acclimated to the scene there.  You might even meet some sorority members and have an edge going into fall recruitment.   At the very least, assuming you work hard and get good grades, you'll have a serious edge over the other freshman because you'll already have a CMU GPA!  That alone could open all sorts of doors for you.
