Question:

Central air-conditioner makes loud banging noise before it kicks off?

It has done it for a really long time, but last week it had to have a fuse replaced and it seems to be even louder now. Just before it kicks off, it makes a really loud sound and even seems to vibrate the wall. If someone hits the wall near it, it will also make a big rumbling sound and kick off. I am more concerned about it's safety at this point than when it is going to quit. My daughter sleeps in the room sharing the wall that it sets in and I'm afraid that it may explode or something. Anyone have any idea what it might be or if it is normal? We live in a rural area and it's really hard to find someone to work on these things. My father-in-law replaced the blown fuse but it was just luck that he was able to do that. It does work and has no other problems besides the loud noise it makes before it kicks off.

  1. I have never heard of one blowing up. It just sounds to me like an old worn out compressor kicking down before the fan goes off,

  2. You could be looking at one of two issues. The compressor on the a/c is mounted on springs which absorb the shock which can come loose. If you can access it and have a look, it may be a case of putting the spring back. There are also spring inside the body of the compressor which serve the same function. If these fail, there is nothing you can do except replace the compressor.

    Good Luck

  3. The banging sound is, unfortunately, normal. It's from the compressor cycling. Newer air conditioners have smaller compressors so the banging isn't as apparent.
