  1. Ice from fire!

Most cooling systems use an electrical pump to increase the pressure of the refrigerant (typically a gas); as the gas pressure falls, so does the temperature and that is how the cooling takes place.

Some systems (gas absorption) increase the pressure of the refrigerant by burning a fuel (typically natural gas). The efficiency of these systems, however, is lower and the systems are typically more complex and expensive than using electrical pumps to increase the pressure mechanically, and so they are somewhat rare. In larger applications (large buildings, for example) the economics tend to converge and you can find both types of systems in use.

  2. Last unit I had installed had a gas furnace and electric AC system. I have not seen a gas AC system.

  3. Depends on the system you get.

  4. It depends on what type of system you have; some central heat and A/C units are natural gas powered.
