  1. The simple answer.

Pull the filter. If it is dirty get a new one or  clean it.

On the thermostat, turn move the system switch to OFF and the fan switch to ON. Let run a couple  hours to thaw.

After thawed, turn fan switch to AUTO. Replace the filter. If you don't have a new one, it is OK to run it for a day while you get a new one.

Turn the system switch back to COOL and see how it does. If it still doesn't work, then the coils are dirty or you are low on refrigerant.

  2. First check your filter, it is probably very dirty, the coil needs air circulation.

  3. HVAC Tech.:  a low charge will cause ice to form ONLY at the evaporator coil. There are two causes for ice to form at the compressor. 1)over charge is one.  2) lack of airflow through the evaporator coil. this be due to furniture being placed in front of return air grill. more likely a dirty air filter or worse still NO filter at all.BEFORE you ruin the compressor turn unit OFF, call a technician and save a fortune in replacement/repair bills!

  4. This is common when the unit is either low on freon, filter need cleaning , or the pipes are clog ed.

  5. Although it sounds backwards, icing can be caused by the unit being LOW on freon. It might also be a clogged inside filter, change or clean it monthly; at the same time, hose out the fins of the outside {condenser} unit.

  6. Check your filter and replace or clean if dirty.

Turn the thermostat off and tun the fan switch to "on"

Let it run for a couple hours and then set the thermostat back to cool.

A dirty filter could have been the cause. If it freezes up again, shut it off and call a pro.

  7. Get a contractor out to check the system over, clean and evaluate it.

These things are mechanical devices just like your car and need maintenance too. Do you drive your car until the engine locks up them get the oil changed? Why run your AC until it drops then get it maintained?
