Central air. my problem is my central air is shutting off prior to reaching the desired temp.it

Question

my problem is my central air is shutting off prior to reaching the desired temp.it will run anywhere from 1/2 hr to 45 minutes shutoff then comeback on in 5 to 10 minutes and repeat cycle without ever reaching desired temp on thermostat.
