Question:

Central air question..

This is probably a really dumb question but.. On my thermostat it says "fan on" and "auto". Does the fan option work as a regular fan? Will it cut down on my electric bill if I just use the fan rather than using auto? Or is this something completely different?

I don't get it.. and thanks in advance!

  1. Auto will cause your A/C to run when needed.  Fan ON will allow the fan only to run, which cools without the high electricity usage.

  2. My a/c stopped working, so I used the fan on.  It did help keep the house cool.  I think you need to turn a/c system off and use just fan to save anything.

  3. The fan switch controls just the fan.

In the on position it will run all the time regardless if you have it in heating or cooling.

Run in this position if you want to keep air circulating for constant filtering or if your system does not heat or cool evenly.

In auto the fan will cycle on and off with the heating or cooling

If you have duct work located in the attic heat can be gained in the summer and lost in the winter when circulating air in the duct so running the fan will cost electricity and add heat.
