Centre Max Unger signs multi-year contract extension with Seattle Seahawks – NFL News
Seattle Seahawks have signed centre Max Unger in a contract extension that spans through multiple years, it was announced on Wednesday, July 25, 2012.
Unger has started all the 32 games he has played in the league. He was drafted by Seahawks in the second round (49th overall pick) in the 2009 draft.
Seahawks’ general manager John Schneider has expressed satisfaction in getting a long-term deal with one of their important players done. Talking to official team website, he said:
"(Head coach) Pete (Carroll) and I are excited to lock up a young core leader on our offense. Max's consistent and professional approach to his job transcends the locker room and the huddle."
Unger started and played every game of his rookie season. He started the 2010 season playing as a starter at right tackle, but he got an injury on his toe which kept him out for the rest of the season.
Last season, Unger played at centre as a starter and went on to play 15 games. Unger was to start the final year of his four-year, $3.2 million rookie contract. Before the contract extension, he was destined to earn $565,000 this season.
Unger gave happy remarks about his contract extension. He said:
"I am very happy about this new deal. We have a developing young line that had some success last year that we can build upon this season. It's a good deal for the both of us and I couldn't be happier to be in Seattle."
He led the offensive line that was ranked fifth in the league last season. Unger was to become an unrestricted free agent come the end of the 2012 season. Seahawks have not disclosed the tenure of the deal.
Seahawks have signed their entire offensive line for beyond the 2012 season. Unger is Seahawks’ second starter to sign a contract within a week with defensive end Chris Clemons also signing a long-term deal.
Head coach Pete Carroll has previously made many changes on the roster, adding many new players. Yet there are few players like Unger who are the backbone of the Carroll’s team.
