Centre Pavel Datsyuk among NHL defensive forward award nominees for fifth consecutive time-NHL news
Detroit Red Wings’ centre, Pavel Datsyuk, yet again is among the three nominees for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, as per an announcement by the National Hockey League (NHL) on Monday, April 23, 2012.
Starting from Friday, April 20, the league has been announcing nominations for ten categories of this year’s NHL awards due to be handed over to a winner from each department of the game of professional ice hockey.
The award ceremony will be held at Encore Theatre at Wynn Las Vegas on June 20, 2012. It will be attended by celebrities from the entertainment and sports industries and notables from other walks of life.
It is an annual feature of the NHL, which in remembrance of many stars from the past and otherwise, awards top-notch players and officials, who are judged on their performance and conduct throughout the last season.
This year’s nominations for the top defensive forward category are St. Louis Blues’ centre, David Backes and Boston Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron, in addition to Datsyuk.
Datsyuk has been nominated for the feat for fifth consecutive time and has already won three trophies successively. His winning streak was ended by Vancouver Canucks’ centre, Ryan Kesler, who won the award last year.
Other players who have been nominated for so many consecutive times as Datsyuk are Montreal Canadiens’ centres, Bob Gainey during 1978 to 1982 seasons and Guy Carbonneau for 1986 to 1990  seasons.
No other player has probably won the trophy so many times as Datsyuk. Some of commentators see him as a likely winner of this year’s trophy as well.
Previously, Datsyuk has won the trophy for 2007-2008, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons.
Professional Hockey Writers Association’s members who vote these players to select the best are going to present their ballot to the league well before the final ceremony. They also have an influence through their opinion making for the nominations of three
finalists for the award.
The NHL is expected to announce the final nominations for more categories in the coming days. The process is expected to be completed on April 30, 2012 when nominations for all ten categories will be revealed.
