Question:

Centrelink youth allowance, where to go from there?

I'm currently living away from home and a fulltime student in year 12.

I don't have a job as I am too busy trying to get good grades and I don't plan on looking for one until I have completed my exams.

My question is once I finish year twelve, will my youth allowance be cut off straight away, or will they allow me time to support myself with a job?

Sorry my question is so long, cheers!

  1. You will stay on youth allowance..

Consedering your at school you should be getting aus study not youth allowance.

You dont get Newstart allowance untill you turn 21..

  2. From what i can remember - im 24 now - it does get cut off when you finish school however you then go onto Newstart Allowance which pays you while you try to find that job.

    Good luck with year 12.

  3. Same thing happened to me i finished year 12, and i was on youth allowance not working, if you live away from home and are under 21 years of age, payment is called jobseeker and you get 355 a  fortnight provided you do not work, this is the maximum they pay out. sometimes your 355 income can change due to your spouse income..(if you have one) you might get extra benefits if you pay rent, you could get rent assisstance.. Depending when you said your course was finishing that when your youth allowance will be cut off, then you will have to apply for a job seeker payment, an 20 mintues interview over the phone, then a further personal interview at your local centrelink office!! any good? i hope so same thing happened to me!!

  4. hmm in my opinion ceno sux..they never helped me out when i was living away from home....

i think theyw ill make you LOOK for work and still get piad..but you have to do all these activities and visit JOB HUNTING days there.....my friend did that and said it was horrible..

but if you have a job...you can get paid but only less depending on what you earn..or if you study again then it stays same

  5. you will be switched over to a different allowance while you look for a job

  6. From experience, you can still get youth allowance. You will need to fill out forms each fortnight to get your payments and show you are looking for a job. Once you get a fulltime job, your payments will stop

  7. Thats something you should ask your parents

  8. I'm on youth allowance as well, and when I rang them up to change a few incorrect details the other night, they told me that closer to the end date of school I will get another letter from them asking for details as to what I'm doing after school.  After this letter/phone call, they do allow you time to set yourself up with a job before the youth allowance is cut off- especially if you're not getting a job i.e. going straight into tertiary education (then it continues)

  9. THEY WILL SWITCH YOUTH ALLOWANCE WITH NEW START ALLOWANCE , SO HTEN YOU WILL NEED TO LOOK FOR THREE JOBS A WEEK OR THEY WILL STOP PAYMENTS.

WHEN YOU START WORKING YOU THEN LOSE 40CENTS OUT A DOLLAR FOR UP TO $130 THEN IF YOU EARN ANYMORE THEN $130 A F/N THEN ITS 60CENTS OUT OF A DOLLAR BUT YOU MAY WANT TO CHECK THESE FIGURES I COULD BE WRONG

GOODLUCK I KNOW HOW TOUGH IT IS TO DEAL WITH CENTRELINK

  10. they will continue your youth allowance if you continue with education (e.g. uni or tafe) otherwise, you will be moved to a jobseeker payment, where they will continue your youth allowance if you can prove you are looking for work.

You will still get youth allowance if you are working and earning under a certain amount.

hope this answers your question! Good Luck
