Question:

Cerazette - taking half a pill?

Basically, I'm on the mini pill Cerazette (haven't been on it for long) and I'm experiencing some unpleasant side affects (bit of nausea, slight dizziness), even if I take my pill before bed. I told my auntie about the side affects and she told me to just take half a pill every night until my body gets used to that, and then start taking a whole pill every night once the side affects have settled down (after like 2 or 3 months or something?). I've been taking just half a pill before bed for a week, and had barely any side affects, definitely an improvement.

I'd like to stress that I'm NOT going to have unprotected s*x whilst just taking half a pill a day!! I won't be having s*x for a couple of months anyway for various reasons.

My question is, is it like.. bad or dangerous or anything to take half a pill a day for a few months to get used to it?

Thanks a lot! x

  1. I wouldn't take half a pill of ANYTHING without consulting your doctor. The pill may be time-release or something, where cutting the pill in half wouldn't be beneficial. So I would check with your doctor!

  2. Honestly, it's not going to hurt you, but I don't think it'll work like you think it will.

Since you're not using it to prevent pregnancy right now, you're right, you don't have to worry about the fact that there's about 24 hours worth of hormones in the pill.

Cutting the pill in half means that you're getting about 12 hours of hormones, which does cut down on the side effects but then again, every 24 hours you're getting a new jolt of hormones instead of keeping everything steady.

How long had you been on the pill when you halved the dosage?  I would think that you would need to be on the regular pill 2-3 months to see improvements in side effects on the regular dosage, so if you half it, I think it will take just as long when you start the regular dose again.

The real question is, what does you doctor think about this idea?

  3. yeah. unless your doctor told you to. I would call the doctor and ask him. Tell him about your side affects when taking the whole pill. he might change your birth control since different pills  affect peoples body different.
