Cermak/Polasek down Giraldo/Souza to reach the semis – Suisse Open Gstaad 2011
No difficulties for the top seeded doubles pair of Frantisek Cermak of Czech Republic and Filip Polasek of Slovakia, as they comprehensively outplayed the duo of Santiago Giraldo of Colombia and Joao Souza of Brazil in the doubles quarter-final of Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad on Friday afternoon.
The top seeded team closed out a straight sets victory at 6-3, 6-4, on an assertive note to reach the semi-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament. Cermak and Polasek took barely 43 minutes to register victory and disposed off their opponents from the tournament in style.
The contest was played on the clay courts of the Credit Agricole Arena in Gstaad, Switzerland, with quality tennis display from Cermak and Polasek to come out as the winners. Their serve game proved to be the critical success factor the top seeded pair in the game, as they delivered 67 per cent of it on target and secured 27 out of 34 first serve points in the matchup.
Giraldo and Souza had a hard-fought victory in the previous round of the tournament but their game appeared too bleak against the top seeded team. They registered only one serve break in the entire contest, while suffering three from their opponents to finish the matchup on the losing end.
Cermak and Polasek were off to an excellent start in the opening set clinched 16 first serve points, with Giraldo and Souza bagging just six. The top seeded duo registered the first serve break of the day in the third game to get the required momentum and then carried on with their aggressive game to nail a second break point a couple of games later to seal the opener at 6-3.
A regular game was witnessed in the second set, which took the scores to 5-4, with Cermak and Polasek leading. A timely serve break from Cermak and Polasek concluded their victory and sends them to the semi-finals, where they will face the combination of Victor Hanescu of Romania and Rogier Wassen of Netherlands for a berth in the final of the tournament.
