Cermak/Polasek overrun Granollers/Riba in the doubles quarter-finals – St. Petersburg Open 2011
Rated at number 11 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Doubles Team Rankings, the duo of Frantisek Cermak of Czech Republic and Filip Polasek of Slovakia registered an authoritative victory over the unseeded Spanish
pair of Marcel Granollers and Pere Riba in the quarter-final encounter in St. Petersburg Open on Thursday.
The top seeded team of Cermak and Polasek took merely 45 minutes of play to ravage their opponents in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, forcing their way into the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour 250 event.
The contest was staged on the indoor hard courts of the Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex in Saint Petersburg, Russia, with the top seeded duo displaying its sheer dominance over the Spaniard opponents. Granollers and Riba
proved a total mismatch for the 11th ranked doubles team and failed to pose sufficient resistance to contain them in the contest.
Cermak and Polasek raced through both set without any difficulty to rocket past their opponents to victory. It was their 29th victory as a team in the running ATP season and three championship titles have already fallen
to their name this year. Cermak and Polasek kept the games short and professional, racing through the sets to register victory in no time.
The top seeded duo clinched 22 out of 29 first serve points in the matchup and converted four out of six break opportunities in the matchup to come out as the winner. Granollers and Riba utterly failed to register a single break
point in the entire matchup, squandering away two vital opportunities in the second set to finish on the losing side in the end.
Cermak and Polasek dropped just one point on their first serve in the opener and nailed two serve breaks right up to seal the first set at 6-2, to get one up in the contest. Their dominance continued in the following set as well
and the top seeded team stung further two serve breaks to close out the contest at 6-2, moving into the semi-finals of the tournament.
Tougher competitors wait Cermak and Polasek in the round of four, as they will go against the third seeded British duo of Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins in the next clash to earn a title shot in the final of the tournament. The
Britons were successful against the combination of James Cerretani of the United States and Philip Marx of Germany in the quarter-finals to book a clash with the top seeded pair in the semis.
