Do I need a CVI to take my horse from Mo-La? And if so how long do they last and what is the standard price? Also is it just a proof of shots or does the vet actually come out and will my coggins work? Also does anybody know a good vet or stable in Monore/W. Monore Louisiana? Thanks

  1. To cross any state lines you need a CVI.  They are good for 30 days for the most part, although I know when EHV was raging, some of the racetracks were requiring 48 hour CVI.  You do have to have a current coggins (good for one year, except for MI), and if you have one, you should be able to just show your copy to the vet that issues the CVI. Typically, it involves an exam, and in fact, we don't list vaccinations on the CVI when we issue them, except for horses going to KY, as it is a requirement for that state that IF the animal has been vaccinated (not that it HAS to be vaccinated) all vaccs must be listed on the CVI.  As far as cost, I'm sure it varies.  At the office I work at, if we don't have a working relationship with the client, then it's either an office visit or farm call fee ($25 for OV, $35 and up for the farm call), plus a $20 exam for the CVI, and $10 for the CVI.  If it's a customer we have a good working relationship with, the docs usually just charge the $10 for the CVI and don't charge for the rest of it.
