Question:

Certification, misdemeanor and teaching?

I was recently put on diversion for driving on a suspended license (bad I know, but I thought it had already been reinstated), and was arrested for "failure to appear in court" for the same case. The case has been closed and I have received my bond back. They were complete acts of irresponsibility, and now I'm afraid I'm not going to get my certification to teach, not to mention get a job if I do become certified. I'm currently in my third year of school to become a high school math teacher. Any advice or experience with this? What should I expect? Should I change career paths?

  1. This is going to vary by state.  You have little choice but to contact your state certification office and inquire... to be safe, I would NOT give your name.  No reason to continue on just by guessing... you need answers and you need them now.  Your failure to appear in court is a damning offense... not even close to driving on a suspended license.  I would recommend that in a month or so you pay to have a criminal background check done on YOURSELF.  It's well worth the money... if nothing comes up, you  won't have to worry about putting your "irresponsibilities" on job applications.  If it does, you'll have to fess up... you know as well as I do that all schools require these background checks.
