On Wednesday, Les Phoceens managed only a draw against Caen. The result means that Marseille are now in 10th place in Ligue 1 standings. The miserable run has opened young right-back, Cesar Azpilicueta’s eyes and the defenders feels that relegation
could be a distinct policy.
While talking to French media, the Spaniard said that though Marseille are in the top half of the table, they still need to be very careful as relegation is still not far away from them.
“We cannot go on like that until the end of May, otherwise we will have problems. We must find solutions now.”
The Spaniard is worried and says that just winning the Coupe de la Ligue is not enough as they need to win at the Velodrome. Azpilicueta feels that despite having so many opportunities, the team always somehow fails to score goals which is a killer.
“The success in the Coupe de la Ligue has brought joy for us and for the fans, but when we play at the Velodrome, then, we must take all three points. For me, the hardest thing to digest is that everyone comes to Velodrome is to take all points. And they
take one or three points. We have opportunities but we don’t score. Before that, we were killers, we scored and defended well. Now it is no longer the case.”
The severity of Azpilicueta’s words certainly show that the youngster is clearly hurt by how things have changed at the club since the turn of the new year.
Things aren’t going well for Marseille and they need to find a formula to manage a win in the league otherwise they Azpilicueta’s fears may prove to be rational.
