Cesar Cielo Filho wins Men’s 50m butterfly gold medal: Day two – 2011 FINA World Championships
Cesar Cielo Filho earned the title of Men’s 50m butterfly on the second day of the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised 2011 World Championships on Monday, July 25, in Shanghai, China.
Cielo Filho won the title of the event in a thrashing time of 23.10 seconds. He was 0.67 seconds behind the world record of 22.43 seconds, made by Rafael Munoz Perez of Spain during 2009. In addition, he missed the championship record of the same event with
a difference of 0.43 seconds, set by Milorad Cavic at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.
The gold medallist is also the champion of 50m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He won the bronze medal in 100m freestyle at the same Olympics, whereas, he claimed the titles of 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
Cielo was followed by Matthew Targett of Australia, who was only 0.18 seconds behind him and occupied the silver medal on the podium, with a timing of 23.28 seconds. Targett’s team-member, Geoff Huegill stayed only 0.07 seconds behind him and stepped on
the podium for the bronze medal, by submitting a time of 23.35 seconds.
Frederick Bousquet of France was the fourth fastest swimmer of the one-lap sprint, as he stayed just 0.03 seconds behind Huegill and concluded his swim in a time of 23.38 seconds. Moments later, Bousquet’s team-member, Florent Manaudou emerged as the fifth
finest swimmer of the event, as he posted a time of 23.49 seconds. He was followed by Steffen Deibler of Germany, who stayed 0.06 seconds behind Manaudou and posted a time of 23.55 seconds. Jason Dunford and Andriy Govorov secured the seventh and eighth positions,
with timings of 23.60 and 23.64 seconds, respectively.
Furthermore, Cielo Filho was extremely delighted with his world title winning effort and he expressed that he will try to do the same in 50m freestyle meet. In addition, the arena acknowledged the fantastic swims of all swimmers, while the winners received
medals for their phenomenal efforts in the medal ceremony.
