Cesar Cielo Filho wins Men’s 50m butterfly heats: Day one – 2011 FINA World Championships
Cesar Cielo Filho of Brazil won the qualifying rounds of Men’s 50m butterfly meet on the first day of the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, on Sunday, July 24.
Cielo Filho occupied the top fastest spot of the event, by concluding his race in a top time of 23.26 seconds. His time was 0.83 seconds away from the world record of 22.43 seconds, set by Rafael Munoz Perez of Spain in 2009. He was also 0.59 seconds away
from the championships record of 22.67 seconds, made by Milorad Cavic of Serbia in 2009.
The 24-year-old Cielo Filho was followed by Australian champion, Geoff Huegill, who remained only 0.01 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and qualified as the second best swimmer into the semi-final, with a timing of 23.27 seconds. Florent Manaudou of
France appeared on the wall as third fastest swimmer, as he concluded his swim in a fabulous time of 23.31 seconds.
The 20-year-old Manaudou was followed by Jason Dunford of Kenya, who stayed only 0.17 seconds behind the third finisher and occupied the fourth fastest qualification spot in the semi-final, with a timing of 23.48 seconds. Dunford was followed by German swimmer,
Steffen Deibler, who stayed only 0.02 seconds behind him and earned fifth fastest spot of the swim, by posting a time of 23.50 seconds. Similarly, Ivan Lendjer of Serbia remained only 0.01 seconds behind Deibler, as he touched the finishing wall in a sixth
fastest time of 23.51 seconds to qualify for the semi-final.
Deibler was followed by Konrad Czerniak of Poland, who failed to overwhelm his preceding swimmer’s effort with a difference of only 0.01 seconds, as he clocked a time of 23.52 seconds. The eighth fastest spot of the swim was secured by Matthew Targett of
Australia, who concluded his race by finishing his swim in a time of 23.52 seconds.
In addition, the arena appreciated the superb efforts of all swimmers, while these participants will meet each other for a head-to-head battle in the semi-final of the same event.
