Cesar Cielo: World record holder of the 50m and 100m freestyle – Part 2
After demonstrating his nerve-wrecking skills at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Cesar Augusto Cielo Filho was headed to prove his mettle in the 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The 25-year-old Cielo was very contented with his gold winning effort in the 50m event and bronze finish in the 100m event at Beijing, but articulated his desire of accomplishing gold medal in both events.
The Sao Paulo raised champion adopted an exhaustive training program with his coach, as he did not want to waste time and make his dream come true at the upcoming Rome world titles.
With his exceptional skills and true determination, Cielo thrashed his competitors at the Brazilian National Championships. With his promising effort at the national level, he sent a frightening message to his international competitors.
Cielo participated in the 50m and 100m freestyle at the world titles and captured gold medals of both events. With his immaculate efforts, he lowered the Roland Schoeman’s championship record of 21.69 seconds by producing an effort of 21.08 seconds for gold
medal.
Nevertheless, the Brazilian picked up his pace in the 100m event and improved Eamon Sullivan’s world mark of 47.05 seconds by posting an effort of 46.91 seconds at the Rome world titles. His eye-catching performance in Rome won the hearts of many and the
Brazilian star went home swelling with pride.
Cielo was delighted with his incredible efforts in the shortest freestyle events. He was scheduled to compete at the 2010 Dubai Short Course (SC) World Championships and the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine.
The 25-year-old decided to add the 50m butterfly to his event roster at the Pan Pacific Championships. His performance deteriorated in the freestyle events as he succeeded in achieving a silver medal in the 50m freestyle while ended third in the 100m discipline
at the Irvine Championships. Nevertheless, the Brazilian stifled all struggles of his challengers in the shortest butterfly discipline by occupying gold medal of the event.
His dwindling performance at the Pan Pacific titles upset his fans and the Brazilian expert aroused expectations of his supporters by expressing that he will try to re-gain his title at the upcoming SC world titles.
This time, Cielo dropped the idea of competing in the butterfly discipline, as he wanted to concentrate on his freestyle events only. He was listed to compete in the events of 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 4*100m freestyle and 4*100m medley relay.
Cielo astonished the Dubai aquatic crowd by improving the championship mark of the 50m freestyle with a fascinating 20.51 seconds effort. He did the same in 100m event, where he overpowered Nathan Adrian’s Championship mark of 46.67 seconds by clocking 45.74
seconds for gold medal. He also captured bronze medals in both relay events.
The following year, he took part in the same events at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara and claimed gold medals in all four of them.
The same year, he withdrew his participation from his main event, the 100m freestyle and took part in the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.
Cielo showed no mercy to his elite competitors and clinched his first international gold medal of the butterfly discipline by posting an effort of 23.10 seconds. With his persistent efforts, he also defended his 50m freestyle title by producing a time of
21.52 seconds.
The Brazilian champion is now struggling hard for his main event, as he declared his goal of lowering the world record at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Furthermore, his fans are excited to see Cielo crushing his own world mark at the biggest stage of sports.
