Cesar Cielo and Cullen Jones wins Men’s 50m freestyle semi-finals – 2012 London Olympic Games
Cesar Cielo and Cullen Jones won the semi-finals of Men’s 50m freestyle on sixth day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatics Centre on Thursday, August 2.
Brazilian swimmer, Cielo, who is the defending champion and reigning world record holder of the 50m discipline, faced tough competition from American swimmer, Jones in the semi-finals.
Cielo dominated first half of the race while Jones bounced back on his shoulder in the second half and succeeded in securing a joint finish for top qualification spot.
Both swimmers demonstrated their unrelenting efforts in the second round of the 50m discipline and made their way to the finishing wall for fastest qualification spot with identical timings of 21.54 seconds.
The duo remained 0.08 seconds ahead of their following swimmer, Anthony Ervin of USA, who earned his way into the playoff as third fastest swimmer by touching the wall with the timing of 21.62 seconds.
Similarly, Ervin was followed by Bruno Fratus of Brazil, who remained just 0.01 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and transpired on the finishing blockade as fourth fastest finisher by submitting an effort of 21.63 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the discipline was obtained by George Richard Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago, who remained only 0.14 seconds slower from his former finisher and surfaced on the wall with an effort of 21.77 seconds.
Bovell was trailed by Florent Manaudou of France, who suffered a loss of 0.03 seconds from his preceding swimmer and hit the finishing blockade with the timing of 21.80 seconds for sixth position.
After that, the audience witnessed exhausting efforts of Australia’s Eamon Sullivan and Roland Schoeman of South Africa for seventh fastest spot of the race. Both swimmers tried hard to escape each other over the finishing but tapped the wall with the same
timing of 21.88 seconds.
On the other hand, James Magnussen of Australia failed to earn his way into the final round as he finished eleventh in the event with an effort of 22.00 seconds.
Furthermore, the final of 50m event will take place on August 3.
