Cesar Cielo captures Men’s 100m freestyle gold: Day one – 2011 Brazilian Open LC Championships
Cesar Augusto Cielo Filho of CRF/RJ captured gold medal of Men’s 100m freestyle on day one of the 2011 Brazilian Open Long Course Championships in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, December 15.
The 24-year-old Cielo Filho defended his title with great audacity and overwhelmed the efforts of his opponents in the two lap freestyle event. With his scintillating effort, he cemented his place on the medal rostrum for gold medal by submitting a wonderful
time of 48.52 seconds.
He remained 1.39 seconds slower than the championship mark of 47.13 seconds, made by Cielo in 2009. He was also 1.61 seconds away from his own world record of 46.91 seconds, made by him at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The gold medallist remained nearly one second ahead of his closest competitor, Nicolas Cesar Oliveira of MINAS TC, who reached the podium for silver medal by clocking a time of 49.39 seconds.
Cesar Oliveira was trailed by Marcelo Chierighini of ECP/SABESP, who remained just 0.01 seconds behind him on the finishing wall and secured the medal rostrum for bronze medal by producing an effort of 49.40 seconds.
In the meantime, the arena witnessed a commendable swim of Cielo’s team-mate, Nicholas A D Dos Santos, who was just 0.02 seconds slower than the bronze medallist and concluded his swim in a time of 49.42 seconds for fourth position.
Dos Santos was chased by his team-member, Joao B De Lucca, who stayed 0.33 seconds behind his former finisher and reached the finishing blockade with an effort of 49.75 seconds for fifth position. Andre Daudt of ECP/SABESP occupied sixth fastest spot of
the race as he completed his double lap freestyle swim with a timing of 49.92 seconds.
Finally, Ricardo Oliveira Machado of MINAS TC and Guilherme Roth Dos Santos of SC NATACAO earned seventh and eighth positions of the freestyle swim by ending their swims with timings of 50.27 and 50.36 seconds, respectively.
The arena went wild with a laudable effort of Cielo Filho in the 100m event whereas the winners received their medals after the conclusion of first session of the championship.
