Cesar Cielo cleared of all charges – 2012 London Olympics
Cesar Cielo, the Olympic Gold medalist from Brazil, has been recently cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport of all doping charges against him.
Earlier in May, the swimmer tested positive for a banned diuretic that was found in his blood on the 20th July and received a warning from the Brazilian governing body. Cielo was not the only one that tested positive for the drug, three other
team-mates were also found with the banned substance in their blood.
FINA, the governing body of swimming in the world, did not think that the warning was enough and had made an appeal to CAS against the decision that was made by the Brazilian authorities. Cielo had appeared before the court yesterday and had pleaded not
guilty. The swimmer’s stance was that he had taken contaminated food unknowingly that had become the cause of the banned drug being found in his body.
Cielo gave the following statement: “At no moment was I careless or negligent. I do not use any medication or supplement without assuring myself of the safety of using it."
Cielo is now cleared of all charges and can freely take part in the FINA World Championships. This has lifted the shadow of doubt from Cielo making an Olympic appearance next year in the London 2012 Olympics.
The following statement was made available on CAS’s website regarding the matter: "The CAS panel... Decided to dismiss the appeals filed by FINA against Cesar Cielo, Henrique Barbosa and Nicholas Dos Santos and to confirm the (Brazilian federation's) decision
concerning them."
Cielo has earned himself a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 50m freestyle swimming event with a time of 21.30 seconds. Cielo did not relax after he had secured gold at the top sporting event of the world and went on to win the 50m as well as
100m events at the Rome world championship the next year. While doing so, Cielo was able to set a new record in the 50m event while making a new world mark in the 100m event.
