Cesar Cielo completes 50m freestyle without taking a breath: Swimming News
The 50m freestyle Olympic gold medallist, Cesar Cielo, stuns the swimming world by finishing a single lap of 50m freestyle without taking a breath at the Maria Lenk Trophy.
Cielo, who earned the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, completed his 50m lap in a wonderful time of 21.95 seconds to conquer the gold medal. Cielo is also the world’s fastest swimmer for the year 2011, as he clocked a time of 21.73 seconds while leading the freestyle relay team of Flamengo club on May 4, 2011.
Brazil’s Cielo will also defend his title at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai this July, as he secured his spot in the national team by earning the gold medal in the 50m event at the National Swimming Championships.
Cielo was followed by Bruno Fratus and Nicholas Santos, who touched the wall for silver and bronze medal, clocking a time of 22.20 and 22.50 seconds respectively.
After completing the race, Cielo told the reporters that he is not tired and he feels good after posting a time less than 22.00 seconds third time this year.
"No, I'm not annoyed by the time. I'm not rested for this competition, I didn't take a breath. Its fine. I'm waiting for the worlds to come round to do a faster time in Shanghai," Cielo said.
In addition, Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe earned the gold medal in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley by clocking a time of 4:37.21 minutes. She was followed by Mireia Belmonte of Spain and Georgina Bardach of Argentina, who reached the podium for the silver and bronze medal, clocking a time of 4:41.45 and 4:49.22 minutes respectively. Bardach faced a fierce battle from Joanna Maranhao of Brazil, who touched the wall for fourth position in a time of 4:49.78 minutes.
In the 200m freestyle, Oussama Mellouli earned the title with a timing of 1:50.01 minutes. hte 1500m freestyle Olympic Champion, Mellouli was slightly ahead of his following swimmers, Nicolas Oliveira and Vinicius Waked, who touched the wall for second and third with a timing of 1:50.37 and 1:50.59 minutes respectively.
Apart from Cielo, 12 other swimmers qualified for the World Championships. These swimmers include Bruno Fratus, Thiago Pereira, Felipe França, Tales Cerdeira, Felipe Lima, Henrique Barbosa, Nicholas Santos, Kaio Márcio, Leonardo de Deus, Henrique Rodrigues, Fabíola Molina and Daynara de Paula.
Besides, Cielo claims that he will provide more to his Brazilian fans at the upcoming world stage of Shanghai. He said that he will defend his title at the Shanghai and will do the same at the 2012 London Olympics. Cielo says that he is ready to take on the challenge of Australian swimmer, James Magnussen.
