Cesar Cielo conquers Men’s 50m freestyle semi-final – Jose Finkel Trophy
Cesar Augusto Cielo Filho of CRF/RJ conquered top qualification spot in the semi-final of Men’s 50m freestyle on day one of the 2012 Jose Finkel Trophy in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Monday, August 20.
Cielo Filho stayed considerably ahead of his opponents throughout the single lap event and faced no trouble in sustaining his fastest qualification spot in the second round. With his unmatchable pace, he enjoyed a comfortable lead over his strongest opponent and qualified into the final as top fastest swimmer.
His commendable pace remained two strokes ahead of his following rival as Cielo tapped the wall for fastest spot with a timing of 21.19 seconds.
His scintillating form remained 0.21 seconds ahead of his closest competitor and team-member, Nicholas A D Dos Santos, who entered the playoff as second best finisher by clocking a time of 21.40 seconds.
Santos was chased by Bruno Fratus of ECP/SABESP, who remained 0.33 seconds apart and proved his audacity for third fastest qualification spot by submitting a time of 21.73 seconds.
Fourth best qualifying spot of the race was obtained by his teammate, Daniel Orzechowski, who was only 0.27 seconds slower and hit the finishing blockade with a timing of 22.00 seconds.
Orzechowski was followed by Andre Daudt of ECP/SABESP, who suffered a loss of only 0.05 seconds from his foregoing finisher and secured fifth place of the race by producing a time of 22.05 seconds.
Daudt was traced by Andre Pereira of GNU, who was 0.07 seconds slower and finished his race in sixth best place by touching the wall with a timing of 22.12 seconds.
Following that, the crowd witnessed gruelling efforts of Gabriel Vasconcellos Mangabeira and Marcelo Chierighini of ECP/SABESP, who remained engage in a neck-to-neck race for seventh spot of the race.
Both swimmers tried hard to escape each other over the finishing end but failed to do so and surfaced as seventh best swimmers by ending their swims in a joint finish with a timing of 22.13 seconds.
Furthermore, Cielo was extremely happy with his fastest qualification effort and promised to achieve the same in final round.
