Cesar Filho Cielo conquers Men’s 50m Butterfly title: Day two – 2011 FINA World Championships
Brazil’s Cesar Filho Cielo stunned the crowd with his impressive performance in the Men’s 50m Butterfly meet on day two of the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, on Monday, July 25.
In the subsequent meet, Cielo produced a cracking swim and snared the golden crown with a sterling time of 23.10 seconds. More importantly, the win handed Cielo with his third consecutive gold medal in the World Championships.
In the 2009 edition of the event in Rome, he won two gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle categories, respectively. In addition, Cesar grabbed the golden crown in the 50m freestyle at the 2008 Olympic Games, in Beijing. Moreover, he nabbed three gold
medals in the 2007 Pan American Games, in Brazil. Besides, he snagged one gold medal at the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, in Irvine.
Meanwhile, Matthew Targett of Australia earned the silver medal with a winning time of 23.28 seconds. Targett’s team-mate, Geoff Huegill secured the bronze medal as he touched the finishing wall in an impressive time of 23.35 seconds.
While speaking about his performance, Huegill stated, “It's been awesome. Tonight, it was great to go out there and enjoy it for what it was. For me, it's just a dream come true. It definitely makes it worthwhile getting off the couch, that's for sure. I'm
stoked with bronze.”
Huegill has won six gold medals during the FINA World Championship editions from 1997-2002. Besides, he also grabbed seven gold medals at the Commonwealth Games editions of the meet from 1998-2010. Furthermore, he snatched two gold medals at the 2001 Goodwill
Games, in Brisbane.
Frederick Bousquet of France wound up fourth in a time of 23.38 seconds. In the meantime, his team-mate, Florent Manaudou earned the fifth place honours in a time of 23.49 seconds. Steffen Deibler of Germany was placed sixth in 23.55 seconds, while Jason
Dunford of Kenya wound up seventh in a time of 23.60 seconds. Andriy Govorov of Ukraine settled eighth after he ended his swim in a time of 23.64 seconds.
