Cesc Fabregas: Spain can have no excuses for Argentina defeat
Spain midfielder Francesc Fabregas today said that the world champions can have no excuses for falling to a heavy defeat in a friendly against Argentina in Buenos Aires Tuesday night.
La Roja fell 4-1 to Argentina after a difficult game which saw the attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez all score inside the first 30 minutes. Fernando Llorente was able to grab a consolation for the Spaniards but substitute Sergio Aguero rounded off the scoring with a header in injury-time.
Arsenal captain Fabregas started the match and he was quick to praise the opposition after the game. He told reporters that: “Nobody likes to lose. We knew it would be a difficult game, and although there are excuses, we do not want them. You have to applaud them because they have attacked four times and scored four goals.”
'Not at our best'
However, the 23-year-old added that he did not believe his side deserved to lose so heavily. Spain hit the woodwork three times and created several other chances throughout the game. Fabregas said that: “It is true that we were not at our best, but neither have we deserved to lose 4-1. I think the result was too wide. We hit the post three times and had more chances. I think the result was too emphatic.”
Real Madrid full-back Alvaro Arbeloa and Villareal winger Santi Cazorla agreed with Fabregas over the final score.
Arbeloa told reporters that: “They were better from the beginning and we gave them chances, but I don’t know if the scoreline is justified.”
Cazorla told Spanish daily newspaper AS that: “We didn't deserve to lose 4-1, but they went ahead very quickly and were convincing in attack. We had chances, but we didn't have the luck in front of goal.”
The loss comes as something of a stunner to the number one ranked Spanish side, high off of their 2008 Euro Cup and 2010 World Cup victories. The Argentinians were bounced from the World Cup in the quarter-finals, losing 4-0 to Germany.
