Can anyone tell me what the two static ports go to on the Cessna 172? I need to know what exactly each one exists.

  1. The static ports are connected to your static-dependant instruments, the altimeter and altitude digitizer, the rate-of-climb, the airspeed, and (if so equipped) an autopilot module for altitude hold. There is also an alternate static valve under the instrument panel for emergency use should the static ports become plugged.

  2. on the side in front of the door hinges.

  3. The main one is on the left side of the fuselage, just in front of the door, its a circle with a little hole in the middle. Inside the cabin, theres the alternate static port, which is under the instrument panel, and its opened by pulling on the red k**b under the mixture control (alternate static k**b).

A third way to get air to the instruments if by some chance both are blocked and you really need your instruments, you can break the face of the VSI, which is the most useless of the 3 instruments relying on the static source, and it will allow air from inside the cabin to be the static air.
