  1. aircraft filing flight plans in the US are asked for an "equipment suffix" that indicates what kind of transponder, if any, is installed, whether the plane is equipped with Distance Measuring Equipment, and some other less common characteristics.

The written form is "Cessna 172/U" but when it is spoken, as on the Communications radio, it is often spoken "slant Uniform" or "slash Uniform".

"U" and "A" are the most common equipment suffixes for small airplanes.

"U" indicated an Altitude-Reporting Transponder is installed on the airplane in question, but no DME.

  2. Altitude encoded transponder equipped.
