Cevrolet Trailblazer: Any one has had problems with braking in snow?

I have 2006 4WD Trailblazer. In snow if I hit the brakes even gently the front go into antilock and I just can't seem to stop no matter how hard I press on the brakes. I have tried taking foot off the brakes and reapplying brakes. Same thing.

Three days ago (with snow on the road and vehicle in 4WD) I was barely driving at 20 mph and the vehicle in front stopped at red light. There was more than sufficent distance between the vehicles yet upon applying the brakes slowly the front brakes went into antilock. Releasing the brakes and reapplying with increasing force did not make any difference and the vehicle would not stop resulting in rear end collision.

An hour and a half later with road conditions a little worse I drove a rental car (Nissan Maxima) at the same place and applied brakes. Car stopped as expected without antilock brakes coming into play.

I have read of one similar report upon Googling this issue. Does any one have any views or info on this matter.

  1. The biggest tasks facing the auto industry when educating drivers about ABS is how to use the brake pedal. For many people, the idea of pumping brakes is ingrained in their heads.

Keep your foot firmly placed on the brake pedal when using ABS. Also, don't back off the pedal if it begins to pulsate, push back or make noises -- that is normal.

Even though most people don't take the time to thoroughly read their car owner's manual, they should. The manuals contain important information about how ABS technology works and how to use the system.

If you still think that your brakes are not working, take it in and let the dealer look at it because it is under warranty.

  2. your brakes are obviously working, and abs is not a better system for the snow, either way you need to do some research on tires, tires are your best friend when it comes to the snow and make the BIGGEST difference in the world.
