Chad Brown devastated by losses over the weekend
Terrific year for trainer Chad Brown turned a little sour at the end of the 2012 campaign, when he had a weekend to forget, as he suffered two losses which he believes should’ve been victories, because he sent out the best in both divisions.
On 24 November, Chad Brown was present at the Aqueduct Racetrack to see his 2-year-old colt, Normandy, run in the Grade 2, $250,000 Remsen Stakes, but it wasn’t to be as the colt couldn’t hold off a persistent, Overanalyze, in the dying stages of the race,
as the latter prevailed by a mere nose to win the race.
Things got from bad to worse, as his heavy favourite, Dayatthespa, spooked in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park and attempted to hop the inside rail, in which he lost her action and had a sustained a cut on her right foreleg, which according
to the horseman will require sutures.
Dayatthespa was going fine, but somehow she got freaked out by something and attempted to go over the rail, though she got back into the race, but lost to longshot, Better Lucky, by a margin of 4 ½ lengths in fifth.
The Matriarch Stakes loss by Dayatthespa was called one of the toughest endured by Chad Brown in his five-year training career. However, the filly of this class will make up for the loss many times over, as she will take residence at Palm Meadows training
center after flying from Southern California to south Florida.
“I was second in two Breeders’ Cup races, but that was the toughest beat I took,” Brown said. “For an hour after the race I kept closing my eyes hoping I was going to wake up from a nightmare.
“I had been planning for that race for six months. Since June, I circled that race, and a quarter-mile into the race you’re done. Toughest one I had to take; loved that filly going into that race.”
It was certainly hard to take, as the filly was coming off a five race unbeaten run in the Matriarch Stakes. She was exiting a front-wheeling victory in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth Cup at Keeneland.
