Chad Brown pleased with Street Life’s Belmont Stakes performance, and points him at the Jim Dandy for the second half of the campaign
Trainer Chad Brown was impressed with Hidden Brook Farm and Magnolia Racing Stable owned 3-year-old colt, Street Life’s performance in the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes at the Big Sandy on 9 June, 2012.
Bred in Kentucky by Mueller Thoroughbred Stable, Street Life finished a respectable fourth in the Belmont Stakes exiting from a third place finish to, Mark Valeski in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes also at Belmont Park on 12 May, 2012, at about 1 1/8 miles.
The 3-year-old Street Sense colt was well beaten at fourth by a convincing margin of 7 ¼ lengths, but under jockey Jose Lezcano, Street Life was anchored at the back of the field trailing the moderate fractions set by, Paynter.
He did show a good turn of foot to finish fourth rallying on the outside, but according to Chad Brown it wasn’t that good, because he was expecting him to challenge the top 3, who were having their own little battle for supremacy away from the rest of the
field.
“I was a little disappointed the horse didn’t show a little more interest early and naturally lay closer,” Brown said, “but he tends to be a lazy kind of horse. He just didn’t have good position early, and then lacked the turn of foot to really make a serious
impact on the top three finishers. All things considered, I thought the horse ran fairly well. He put his run in; it wasn’t good enough.”
Street Life is a lightly raced maiden of 2012, and he debuted on 5 January, 2012, at Gulfstream Park going six furlongs, but it was a disappointing debut for Street Life, who finished a dismal 8th on the day.
Though, he bounced back well and finished on top of the pile with a sleek run over the 1 mile 70 yards distance at Aqueduct racetrack.
It was on to the Derby trail from then on, as Union Rags tried a stakes race called the Broad Brush Stakes also at Aqueduct, and downed it in fine style, winning it in 1 minute and 46.87 seconds, but the step-up on company in the Wood Memorial was a little
premature as he finished the race in 6th after a troubled trip.
The Belmont Stakes and the Triple Crown is done with, but for the second half of the campaign, Chad Brown sees the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes in Street Life’s future at Saratoga.
