Chad Campbell and Michael Thompson surge into midway lead at RBC Canadian Open
Chad Campbell and Michael Thompson compiled a score of four-under par in the second round of the RBC Canadian Open to surge into clubhouse lead. The Professional Golf Association (PGA) event, carrying a purse of $5,200,000, is taking place at the par-70
Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, Canada.
Campbell chose to tee-off from the back and patiently rose into the lead. His start wasn’t ideal, as the player remained at par in the opening four holes. However, as the day progressed, the American started to feel more comfortable with his driving and
putting. He started to make a few birdies and wrapped the back nine with a score of one-under-par, 34.
Carrying a good run of form into the front nine, Campbell clamped three more birdies against one bogey and wrapped the day in lead. His best shot of the day was seen at the opening par-4 hole, which is rendered as the toughest hole on the course.
“Yeah, definitely happy. A lot of golf left, but I'm definitely happy with the start,” said Campbell, while speaking to reporters after the day’s play.
The American was soon joined by his compatriot Thompson, who posted a score of four-under-par 66 in the second round. Unlike Campbell, Thompson teed off from the front and managed to set the pace for rest of the day. He missed the cup for par at the third
hole, which could’ve brought his confidence down, however, that dropped shot didn’t change much as he carded two birdies and wrap the front with a score of one-under.
Later, the player carded three more birdies and sealed the day with a 66, an impressive score for an amateur like Thompson.
Commenting on his game, Thompson said, “My short game, my putting and chipping has been really solid this past two days. Which, on a golf course like this, is what you need because you’re not going to hit a lot of fairways and you’re not going to hit a lot
of greens?”
Both Thompson and Campbell are looking good at the moment and will be hoping to stretch their lead on the second day of the tournament.
