Chad Huffman hitting form in AFL, eyeing return to Major Leagues
Chad Huffman may not be a Major League player at the moment but he has all the room to improve his game as he is currently involved in the Arizona Fall League (AFL). Playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs, the first baseman is making a case for a first baseman
position with the Cleveland Indians.
His aim is to bat competitively, edging off all the unwanted defects in the process. The player spoke to the press on Wednesday, November 2, after he guided his team to an 11 – 8 win over the Mesa Solar Sox. Hitting for the club in the eighth, he did the
most damage against the opposition as he smashed a grand slam to the left field against White Sox affiliate pitcher, Brandon Kloess.
Huffman has a history that heavily links him to the Major Leagues. He was picked up by the San Diego Padres in the second round of Draft Picks in 2006. He was claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees, where he played in 2010 for nine games, hitting .167
from 18 At – Bats. The star was then put on waivers again. This time the Indians claimed him.
He appears to be doing well in the Fall League as he currently stands on a .231 batting average. His recent hit was a classic moment in his career. He did not take the effort away from the pitcher though, as he credited him for good pitching.
"I was just battling with the bases loaded, trying to get a hit," he said. "[Kloess] had some good stuff, he really did. Good slider, fastball. I got a fastball up and it kind of happened. I got the barrel on it and it stayed fair."
Talking about his work on improvement, he gave a slight idea to the reporters.
"I'm definitely working on my defence at first base, getting comfortable out there," he said. "Just getting consistent, working on your craft a little bit. There's always room for improvement. The more consistent you are, the closer you are to being a Major
Leaguer."
With Huffman gaining momentum, the Indians could be hoping to gain a lot from his role on the first base.
