Chad Kagy wins Best Trick Bike contest at Winter Teva Mountain Games – Mountain Bike News
American professional BMX rider Chad Kagy secured the highest spot on the podium in the Best Trick Bike competition at the inaugural Winter Teva Mountain Games that went down in Vail, Colorado, on Saturday, February 11.
Mike Montgomery finished in runner-up place, while Sam Pilgrim took third place to complete the podium.
Saturday did not only find the 33-year-old Californian competing in his first-ever mountain bike competition, but also saw him return to action for the first time since the BMX Big Air contest at X Games 17 last year. Kagy had broken his femur during the
Final, but stilled managed to take home the bronze.
Despite being new to mountain biking, Kagy hardly had any trouble adjusting to the new environment. The only thing that apparently made him uneasy was the chilling weather, though he hardly let that affect his performance.
As the Best Bike Trick got underway, Kagy proved that he was still a formidable force by soaring about 30 feet in the air and cleanly landing a back-flip tail whip. The burst of fire on the knuckle of the snow kicker and the slippery landing served to make
the trick even more thrilling to witness. The trick remained the most stylish of the night and consequently carried him to victory.
“This is my first contest back so I'm happy to walk away with a win,” Kagy said after the Final. “This is my first time snowboarding and my first time riding a bike in the snow. Hopefully this happens again because it was a good time. I'll dress a little
more appropriately next time -- my toes are frozen.”
Kagy got to take home a cheque of $5000 for his winning performance.
Montgomery finished in second place after throwing a front-flip off the jump, while Pilgrim celebrated a podium finish, courtesy of a flip-table to one-foot X-up.
Finding a BMX rider competing in a mountain bike competition was surprising indeed, but Kagy explained that he was competing at the Winter Teva Mountain Games because of his friend and mountain biker Cam McCaul., whom had accompanied him during his tour
with the Nitro Circus.
The Californian BMX rider conceded that he had been asking his friend to send him a mountain bike for a long time. The latter had agreed to send him a bike in a mountain, further adding that he would send it in a day if Kagy agreed to ride with him in a
contest. An agreement was reached and thus the multiple-time X Games winner found himself taking a trip to Vail.
While McCaul himself was not competing in Saturday’s event because of a shoulder surgery, but was serving as a judge.
