Chad Le Clos wins three gold medals in swimming events: Day two – 2011 Swimming World Cup - Part 2
After acquiring the title of 200m Individual Medley (IM) on day two of the 2011 Swimming World Cup, Chad le Clos was headed towards his fifth event of the championship, 100m butterfly final.
With the possession of four gold medals in the first stop of World Cup series, Le Clos gained more confidence to make a splash in his remaining events.
Moments later after his 200m IM, Le Clos emerged on the starting blocks for the 100m butterfly playoff. Unlike IM event, where Le Clos followed the lead of his challenger, he gained a marginal lead over his competitors in the first lap and he ended his first-lap
in 23.89 seconds.
His splendid efforts in the initial-lap of his swim placed him 0.05 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Evgeny Korotyshkin of Russia, who ended his lap in a time of 23.94 seconds.
Then, the champion went full throttle in the second-lap, where he paced up his swim and extended his lead to 0.58 seconds from his following swimmer and submitted a time of 50.66 seconds for gold medal.
In the meantime, Korotyshkin sustained his second fastest spot of the swim and reached the podium for silver medal by posting an effort of 51.14 seconds for silver medal. The Russian was chased by Jason Dunford of Kenya, who proved his determination for
the bronze medal and hit the wall with a timing of 51.70 seconds.
After the 100m butterfly, Le Clos was now set to roll in his final event of the championship, 200m back-stroke, which was the second last event of the championship.
In a short time, he moved towards the starting blocks to compete for his sixth potential gold medal of the championship in back-stroke event. Just like his previous events, the champion had a comparatively powerful start from his rivals.
With his spirited efforts in the back-stroke discipline, he ended his first-lap of the race in 28.21 seconds and remained 0.02 seconds ahead of Brazil’s Nelson Silva Junior, who swam the same distance in 28.23 seconds.
Le Clos managed a half-length body lead from Junior in the second lap, where he completed his first-half of the race in 58.44 seconds as compared to Junior’s 58.49 seconds effort.
Both contenders had engaged each other in a severe battle as the arena’s favourite, Le Clos clocked a remarkable time of 1 minute and 28.49 seconds to complete his first three laps of the back-stroke swim.
Le Clos presented a gruelling effort in the final-lap of the event and reported a time of 1 minute and 55.95 seconds for the gold medal. His strongest opponent, Junior, followed him on the podium for silver medal as he concluded his swim in a wonderful time
of 1 minute and 58.37 seconds.
In the meantime, Kristian Kron of Sweden earned third position of the swim by producing a nice time of 1 minute and 58.41 seconds.
The session ended after the completion of all scheduled events while the contest will get stronger in the next stop of World Cup series in Stockholm as the Canadian and Australian teams have confirmed their participation in the European leg of the competition.
