Question:

Chad Pennington question

With Favre coming to New York why did the Jets release him? I know he was the starting QB, but why not keep him as the #2 QB. Pennington would have made a good backup. He was a h**l of a lot better the Clemens. They should have kept Pennington and had Clemens and Ainge battle it out for the #3 spot. What do you think?

  1. It was a money issue, and they felt they owed him the ability to find a better situation for himself...Locally (NJ) they claim Parcells may be interested in bringing him to the Dolphins.

  2. Clemens is young and can be trained whereas Pennington has had 8 seasons to suck. He's also too expensive to be a backup. Good move for the Jets. Contrary to your average fan, I see the Jets doing well this year with Farve. Farve brings the excitement and veteren leadership the Jets have lacked for years!

  3. They wouldnt have been able to afford Favre without cutting Pennington.  Why pay 6 million for a backup QB when he isnt your long term answer (like Ainge or Clemens).

  4. Of course there's the money, but Clemens is younger, more time to cultivate him.  I love Chad, but I think its time for him to start coaching.  He's got all the smarts, just not all of the athletic ability.  I know the stats, and he's got some good ones, but I just doubt that he'll ever get to the "Superstar" level that the Jets REALLY need in a starting QB.  Favre's ok for the interim, but we need to look to the future as well.

  5. might be a money issue.

  6. Salary cap.He is the oldest outside of favre on the qb list also.

  7. kevin is right...it was a money issue.  They had to clear cap space to bring Favre onto the roster.  Releasing Pennington freed up nearly $8 million.

  8. Favre salary is very high and the team could not afford both qb's since Pennington salary is higher then the other two it made sense to cut him.  I hope he lands with a good team the Vikings could use him and he is not as likely to throw picks like Favre.  In fact as a Packer fan I would be more concerned about a Pennington led team then a Favre led team.  Brett has a tendency to throw the ball into coverage, when the pressure is on plus he is in the twilight of his career.

  9. Its all comes into play that before the whole Favre trade Pennington and Clemens were in a qb race for the starting position and in comes Brett which ends the race and gives Favre the starting position.Pennington would be a great back up but doesnt see himself as a back up.For the money he's getting paid at least.Releasing him made it easier on cap space and for the Jets locker room. For them to keep him, promise him a shot to compete for the starting job and then kick him to number 2 would be a mess.letting him go was the best way to settle it.He'd probably want to be let go anyways.

  10. lol ainge and clemens a long term answer h**l no they both suck jets r dumb trade for a old *** qb whos retiring in a year or so they need to draft a good qb  next year and stop acting like clemens is actually good

  11. who would pay  that much money for CHAD PENNINGTON......  somebody will pick him up for a backup.

  12. I think they think that Clemens is going to be their quarterback when Farve retires, so he can learn lots from Brett Farve
