Chad Reed clinches win at Redbud National
Two-Two Motorsports/Bel-Rey’s team rider, Chad Reed, grabbed top honours at the sixth round of Lucas Oil American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Motocross Championship, RedBud National, which went down in Buchanan, Michigan, on Saturday, July 2nd.
Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey finished in second place, while Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto rounded out the Top 3.
With his latest overall win, Reed has further cemented his place at the top of the 450-Class rankings, extending his lead over Villopoto. Dungey is breathing right down the Kawasaki team rider’s neck while sitting in third place.
During the first 450-Class moto, Davi Millsaps got off to an excellent start, grabbing the hole-shot and maintaining the lead for the first half of the race. However, Reed remained in close pursuit and eventually edged past him by the middle of the race.
Dungey, who had collected his first overall victory of the season last Saturday at Thunder Valley, trailed the top two riders for most of the race. After finally managing to overtake Millsaps, he kept on charging towards the Australian, but the effort remained
futile and Reed comfortably rode off to victory.
The Rockstar/Makita Suzuki star finished second, while Millsaps rounded out the third position. Villopoto finished in ninth place after having an unfortunate incident with his silencer.
After the first moto, Dungey needed to finish in first place in order to walk away with victory. However, if he was unable to do that, a top-three finish for Reed would have allowed the Two-Two Motorsports/Bel Rey’s rider to add another win to his name.
In Moto 2, the Washington-based rider made an excellent comeback after his luck bailed on him in Moto 1. Grabbing the hole-shot, Villopoto took an early lead and began to work on widening the gap between him and his closest pursuer, Dungey.
Throughout the race, the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki team rider remained in pursuit of Villopto, but the leader of the pack did not give him any substantial opportunity to capitalise on. In the end, the Kawasaki rider finished the race with a convincing eight-second
win over his rival.
With Dungey finishing second, Reed only required a third-place finish to earn an overall victory. After losing the third place to Mike Alessi in the opening minutes of the race, the Australian won the position back with 10 minutes remaining. This time, he
held on to his place firmly and successfully finished in third place to seal the fate of RedBud National.
Talking to the media after the race, Reed said, “Each time I went out on the track today, it was different. I learned a lot about my bike, and a lot about myself as a person about the decisions I need to make on race days.”
With the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship reaching its half-stage, Reed is well on his way towards the title. The series will bring the riders to Millville, Minnesota's, for Spring Creek National on July 16th.
