Chad le Clos acquires Men’s 100m butterfly gold - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Chad le Clos of South Africa acquired gold medal of the Men’s 100m butterfly on day two of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday, December 13.
The South African swimmer stifled hopes of his opponents in the 100m discipline as he cruised his way towards the finishing end for the title.
His invincible effort placed him more than half a body length ahead of his closest swimmer as he tapped the wall with the timing of 48.82 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by the fastest qualifying swimmer of the race, Thomas Shields of USA, who remained 0.72 seconds behind and reached the finishing blockade for silver medal by producing a time of 49.54 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Ryan Lochte of USA, who was 0.05 seconds slower and tapped the wall for bronze medal with an effort of 49.59 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the discipline was obtained by Joeri Verlinden of Netherlands, who stayed full body length behind and settled on the wall by clocking a time of 50.45 seconds.
Subsequently, Verlinden was chased by Konrad Czerniak of Poland, who stayed 0.09 seconds slower from overpowering his preceding swimmer and submitted a time of 50.54 seconds.
Afterwards, the audience witnessed exhausting efforts of Rafael Munoz Peres of Spain and Nikolay Skvortsov of Russia, who involved each other in a stroke-to-stroke battle for sixth place.
Both swimmers demonstrated their expertise in the race but failed to outsmart each other and touched the wall with the same timing for sixth position.
They remained 0.22 seconds away from Czerniak, who tapped the wall with an effort of 50.76 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was obtained by Laszlo Cseh of Hungary, who suffered a loss of 0.17 seconds from the duo of sixth fastest finishers and touched the wall with an effort of 50.93 seconds.
Furthermore, Le Clos expressed happiness after securing the title of the discipline and told that he will train harder in future as he wishes to lower the world record of the butterfly event.
