Chad le Clos overpowers Michael Phelps in Men’s 200m butterfly – 2012 London Olympic Games
Chad le Clos of South Africa overpowered the defending champion and world record holder, Michael Phelps of USA in the Men’s 200m butterfly on day four of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatics Centre on Tuesday, July 31.
The South African swimmer, who entered the final round as top fastest swimmer, served notice of his talent in the distant butterfly discipline as he dethroned Phelps from his butterfly title.
The 20-year-old le Clos followed the lead of Phelps throughout the event but with his unrelenting efforts in the last 25 metres of the swim, he managed to outperform the American for the title.
He remained just an inch ahead of Phelps on the finishing end and proved his mettle for gold medal by touching the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 52.96 seconds.
His stupendous effort remained 0.05 seconds faster from the American veteran, who settled on the podium for silver medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 53.01 seconds.
Phelps was followed by Takeshi Matsuda of Japan, who was only 0.20 seconds apart and finished his race in third place by producing a time of 1 minute and 53.21 seconds.
The Japanese swimmer was followed by Dinko Jukic of Austria, who remained full body length behind and transpired on the finishing end as fourth fastest swimmer with the timing of 1 minute and 54.35 seconds.
Jukic was chased by Tyler Clary of USA, who secured fifth position of the event by reporting an effort of 1 minute and 55.06 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Velimir Stjepanovic of Serbia, who tapped the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 55.07 seconds.
Subsequently, Stjepanovic was traced by Pawel Korzeniowski of Poland, who ended his swim in seventh best place with an effort of 1 minute and 55.08 seconds.
Eighth position of the distant butterfly discipline was gained by Chen Yin of China, who clocked a time of 1 minute and 55.18 seconds.
In addition, le Clos was extremely pleased with his gruelling effort in the 200m discipline.
