Chadwick boys volleyball team defeats Viewpoint in semi-final of CIF Southern Section Div 5 event
The Chadwick boys volleyball team was able to make themselves proud in the semi finals of the CIF Southern Section Division V tournament.
Chadwick had never be to the championship final for the past two years as they always got pushed out at the semi-final stage. However, this time around, Chadwick was able to defeat Viewpoint and secure themselves a 3-0 win.
Not only did Chadwick manage to win the semi final in three back-to-back sets, they did so by bagging each set of the game by a comfortable margin. Furthermore, Viewpoint was defeated while playing with the added advantage of being in its own home court.
By the time that Chadwick had started celebrating its long awaited and well deserved win by jumping with joy while Viewpoint was moving out of the court cradling their disappointment, the scoreboard read 25-13, 25-22 and 25-20.
With their recent win, Chadwick has been able to tally their overall season victories to 22. These wins have been achieved after Chadwick experienced 6 losses. As opposed to the overall season record of Chadwick, Viewpoint has not had such a commendable
season. The performance statistics of Viewpoint show 15 victories. These wins have been registered at the cost of undergoing 6 losses.
The initial part of the first set of the game saw both Chadwick as well Viewpoint take points away from each other in a tug of war. However, as the set reached its middle stages, the Dolphins took control by taking the lead for themselves at 14-10. After
this point, it seemed that the confidence of Viewpoint was shaken as they were unable to stop the Dolphins from scoring the 11 out of the next 14 points. As a result, the Dolphins were able to bag the first set of the game at 25-13.
Losing the first set of the game did not demotivate Viewpoint as they started the second set with determination. They were able to take the lead and maintain control at 13-9. Dolphins put on a spurt of speed and brought the score to 13-11 which later was
translated into a Dolphin lead at 17-16. The match got competitive afterwards but the Dolphins were able to finish it off on their terms at 25-22.
The loss of the first two games made Viewpoint lose heart. They were unable to play at their best and gave away the third set of the game to the Dolphins at 25-20.
“Coming out and playing so well in the first game was extremely important because it put them back on their heels,” Chadwick coach Michael Cass said. “Our blocking was the key tonight, especially in the first game. Our team has transformed from a bunch of
athletes playing volleyball, to a bunch of athletes thinking like volleyball players. This feels awesome.”
