Chael Sonnen has sympathies for Stephan Bonnar – UFC News
Chael Sonnen, ‘The American Gangster’, knows how hurtful middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s knee strikes are. According to a report from Fightline.com, Chael Sonnen iterated that the knee strike Stephan Bonnar had to suffer was a devastating one. Sonnen
admires Anderson Silva’s fight skills, saying the ‘Spider’ knows when and where to attack his opponents.
“It's completely devastating,” said Sonnen on Fuel TV on October 14 regarding Stephan Bonnar’s knockout loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 153. “I can't think of anything more painful. Your legs don't work. It's absolutely debilitating, especially for someone
like Stephan Bonnar who never gives up.”
Probably, Sonnen is one person who can relate to the pain Bonnar suffered, as he too has been a victim of Silva’s knee strikes.
“Everyone in my corner was trying to kill me, but I just felt comfortable with my back against the cage,” said Silva during the post fight press conference. “As I’m from the lower weight division, I was much quicker than he was, so I could [slip] past his
strikes before he made them. For me, it was easier to have my back to the cage, and it helped me conduct the fight the way I wanted.”
Sonnen has lost to Silva twice. The American Gangster went head to head with the Brazilian earlier this year, promising fans and his dying father a win but he could not achieve. Instead, Sonnen fell to Silva in the second round and suffered a knockout.
On the other hand, Silva escalated to 16 wins without any losses in his UFC portfolio by defeating Bonnar. The middleweight champion was widely appreciated for his aggressive performance against ‘The American Psycho’, something he is not used to doing.
Silva is usually more of a smart player who gauges his opponents, makes them swing to tire and then attack. However, against Bonnar, Silva went at it right from the beginning. He gave it to the ‘American Psycho’ right in the first round to show his dominance
in the world of mma.
For now, Sonnen believes Silva’s knee strikes is the Brazilian Spider’s main weapon.
