Chael Sonnen is fifth top sports villain of 2011, ranked by Yahoo Sports – UFC News
The 34-year-old American mixed martial art (MMA) fighter Chael Sonnen has been recognized for something which is not that admirable. He has been named fifth in the list of top sports villains for the year 2011. This was revealed
on December 28, 2011.
Over the years Sonnen has been under the media spotlight for being an extrovert person. His comments and statements have often time placed him in a controversial position and he is known for giving open views to fellow fighters
especially to the opponents he has beaten. For his outright slaughtering remarks he has been under the radar for a long time.
Sonnen has also been under the spotlight for his performance in the UFC. He made his debut at UFC 55 against Renato Sobral in October 2005 but ended up losing the fight. He won only a single fight out of the three he contested
in which resulted in his release from the UFC. He then joined the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) and won two out of the three bouts he fought. Later, when WEC was bought by Zuffa Inc. the parent company of UFC, Sonnen made his return back into the UFC. He
then competed in six fights for the UFC, winning four and losing two of them.
The list of fighters came at Yahoo Sports, in which women’s tennis superstar and former Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams, came at the second spot while the first spot was shared among David Joel Stern, commissioner of
the National Basketball Association (NBA) and William Hunter, the executive director of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). With Sonnen’s name this is how Yahoo Sports described the fifth place winner, “A one-man MMA goon squad who has ripped
on Octagon girls, stormed out of interviews and makes WWE declarations to beaten opponents. The highly-ranked American middleweight had off-octagon problems as well. In January, he pleaded guilty to mortgage fraud and received two years' probation.”
UFC fans have two views regarding Sonnen’s fifth place at the top sports villains of 2011. Some have the view that he might be placed on top while others think that some other UFC or MMA fighter should also be placed in the
list. With Sonnen the only MMA fighter in the list, it is clear that no other fighter has the same tenacity with which they give their comments.
