Chael Sonnen might hop to light heavyweight division after Silva defeat – UFC News
After a devastating knockout defeat to Anderson Silva, middleweight UFC fighter Chael Sonnen wants to move to the light heavyweight division.
In his recent interview, Sonnen spoke of shifting division to make the most of his UFC career.
“The is simply an option to start over by changing weight class. My mentors have done it, and it could happen. I would go up to 205. Jon Jones. There are some great guys at 185, but traditionally and historically, it is a good way to get a fresh start and
start over,” said Silva in his recent interview with Ariel Helwani.
When asked if he wants to take on Anderson Silva for the third time, Sonnen said, “If I had the chance to fight him again, I would definitely take it. I am appreciative of him and of [this] chance he gave me to fight him again and the first time. I was very
good for Anderson, but Anderson was very good for me too.”
Sonnen’s career shattering loss to Silva was seen as a damaging way of leaving the division. However, since Sonnen has defeated most of the fighters at the division, there is no point of him staying.
The duo went head to head at UFC 148, two weeks earlier. Anderson Silva stood by his promise and knocked out the American gangster. On the other hand, Sonnen, who had promised to end Anderson’s era, could not do much but defend himself from the vicious blows
of Silva.
President of UFC Dana White was highly disappointed with Sonnen. On the possibility of a third encounter between the two, Dana said Sonnen has proven he is not better than Silva twice and so a third match is not possible.
Sonnen’s trash-talk before the event was the reason of its extraordinary hype. It was the most demanding UFC match of all time, but it ended with little. Sonnen went down in just 2 rounds, shocking his fans and foes.
Sonnen, after the fight, admitted Silva as the best fighter. He shook hands and paid tribute to the Brazilian spider, who is the longest reigning middleweight champion of the organization.
