Question:

Chain issues on my YZ250?

I have a 2003 YZ250, and it has the original chain (a standard DID 520). I know I should replace it, but I have a peculiar problem. When I adjust the chain to spec (about 2 inches slack, measured above the upper chain guide rear bolt), after a bit of riding the chain heats up and gets as tight as a guitar string. Thankfully I noticed and stopped before it broke anything. Does anyone know why this happens? Has anyone else had this happen? Will a new chain correct the problem?

  1. agree with joe!

  2. I can't believe that's the original chain on there. It just can't be. if you do what your supposed to and oil it before or after every ride then once if gets hot and the lube is gone and metal links expand the get tight.

if that's the original chain you'll need new sprockets as well, replace the lot in one go, it will save you money in the long run.

on what chain to buy its simple. if you don't look after your chain buy O ring. the O rings seal the lube that the factory put into the chain.and keeps dirt etc out. the down side is its hard to get lube into the chain. o ring stops both ways. don't attack a o ring chain with a wire brush.

if your a good boy and clean lube your chain before and after every ride you won't really need a o ring chain as it gets plenty of lube anyway.

  3. you need to replace your chain it was probley streched when it was adujusted

  4. I agree with SWT - the chain is seizing.

When it gets tight, loosen the axle nut and chain adjusters.

Push the wheel forward and try to bend the chain.

Remove the chain and measure it's length when cold.

Do the same when it gets hot and tightens up.

  5. your axel nuts might not be tight enough this would make the back wheel move back witch would then make the chain tight,go to your local motocross mechanics they will tell you good look keep riding

  6. i cannot believe your chain hasnt snapped! it is 5 years old! that is several lifetimes in motocross...count yourself lucky and buy a new one dude...

btw you need new sprockets too...

  7. I never had this problem before, but go ahead and get a new chain, and sprockets (you replace all) . Try keeping your chain clean..... wire brush it after a ride and spray wd40 on it so it doesnt rust. I wouldnt buy an O ring chain because they are so expensive and it sounds like you dont take good care of the one you got so why waist the money?

  8. I used to have that same problem. The links are worn out, and seizing while you ride, then after your ride, you wash and reprep your bike, and lube the chain, and it will break loose and be normal again.

the chain needs to be replaced. Try running an O-ring or X ring chain. They cost more, but are well worth the money......
