Question:

Chainsaw Recommendation for newbie?

by  |  earlier

I need a bit of help.

I make my own musical instruments (didgeridoos) from salvaged wood from storm downed trees.

Generally, I'm cutting limbs that are under 7" in diameter. They are always on the ground (mostly, anyway). I would use it about 10 hours a month.

Considering gas-powered only.

Any tips would be appreciated

  1. A chainsaw is usually a limited use tool.  If you need portability, then obviously you need a gas powered one.  but jsut remember one thing.  A chain saw is a pretty dangerous piece of equipment.  i have witnessed more people get injured with a chain saw than with any other tool except for maybe a table saw.  the trick with using any of these tools is not to use them late in the day.  Most injuries happen at that time because of fatigue, and im talking about amateurs as well as pros.  since most limbs are under 7",  i would recommed that you use a sawzall.  which is an electric hacksaw with a wood cutting blade.  the have regular and battery operated ones.  i have used that for years and believe it is a lot safer than a chain saw.  Also since it is electric, it requires less maintenance than a chain saw and those little gas engines are quite finicky.  If you must use a chain saw invest 60 dollars on an electric one.  less hassles unless you need ultimate in portability.  Try consumer reports for ratings on chain saws.  I heard Stihl makes good ones.  If you buy the

sawzall, get a commercial model like milwaukkee or dewalt etc.  Northern tool supply usually has a good selection of both.
