Question:

Chainsaw newbie?

I just got a used Echo 500vl chainsaw. I don't know much about chainsaws and paid $50 for it. It starts and stays running but the chain will continue to spin while the saw is idling. Isn't it supposed to stop spinning? Did I get ripped off?

  1. Mustange....is pretty much right on with his answer.  That being said this is a TERRIBLE place to learn about chainsaws and their usage.  They are very powerful and useful tools when used by experienced and skillful operators.  They are also a quick trip to the emergency room if used by untrained or careless operators.  Find someone locally (contact your local extension service and/or arborist association) to train you properly.

Do a search for chainsaw wound images if you think I'm kidding......(there aren't a lot of pictures, but the few I've seen should be convincing enough)

  2. yes. push the bar above the handle. no. beware of kickback.

  3. Either it's idling too fast or the centrifugal clutch is hanging up. The clutch is supposed to disengage when at idle so the chain stops and reengage when the engine speeds up. This is all from centrifugal force so if the idle is too high the chain will continue to spin. A bad clutch will also cause it.

  4. you got ripped off, do not use this. its a death trap
