Challenging conditions trouble Audi Azzurra Sailing Team on Day 2 of 2011 City of Barcelona Trophy
Italy’s Audi Azzurra Sailing Team could not perform well on Day 2 of the 2011 Conde de Godo City of Barcelona Trophy, as they were troubled by challenging weather conditions on Barcelona waters. However, Sweden’s TP52 boat Ran sailed impressively to finish
on top of the standings at the end with six points overall after four races.
The forecast on second day of Conde de Godo City of Barcelona Trophy was lighter, as the breeze seemed building around 12 knots early in the morning but the predictions went wrong when the race management announced for two races only due to lighter winds
of up to seven knots.
Swedish team, Ran, had a superb sail even under such conditions and led the fleet to the windward mark on the right. Italian Audi Azzurra could not keep up with the conditions and dropped down at number four in the first race. The second race was even worse
for the Italians, as they sailed to finish eighth in the fleet while Ran hit second spot.
While speaking to local media after the race, Audi Azzurra Sailing Team strategist, Vasco Vascotto said, “The forecast for today says things are going to be tough out there again, with light conditions. RÁN´s sailing great, they´ve struggled at some points
of the season but they are really in shape now, and its proves that anyone can win here in Barcelona.”
He further added, “With a good day we can solve this. We have to stay calm. Yesterday we saw the Barça-Milán football match, where a team dominated the whole time and the match ended up with a tie. That made us think, because if things like that happen in
football it´s even more likely that they´ll happen on the race course. We´ll see how it goes out there today.”
The overall standings of TP52 Series at the end of Day 2 are given below:
1. RAN (SWE), 2, 1, 1, 2 = 6 points
