Challis Wright secures Men’s 100m backstroke gold: Day one - South African LC Nationals
Challis H Wright of CGA-CG secured gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke in S14-S15 Multi-Class disability on initial day of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Monday, April 16.
The 20-year-old Wright displayed his nerve-wracking skills in the playoff as he captured gold medal of the discipline. Wright failed to substantiate any improvement in his qualification time but with his alluring efforts, he managed to outperform his rival on the finishing end for gold medal.
Wright, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the playoff, won gold medal of the event by touching the wall in a time of 1 minute and 11.07 seconds.
His immaculate effort remained 0.10 seconds slower from Martyn Groenewald of WPA-WP, who secured second position of the discipline by touching the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 11.17 seconds.
Subsequently, bronze medal of the discipline was seized by Wright’s teammate, Craig F Groenewald, who stayed nearly one second behind and ended his sprint in a time of 1 minute and 12.13 seconds.
The fourth position of the discipline was obtained by Sipho Mjoka of KZNA-KZ, who remained nearly five seconds behind and posted a time of 1 minute and 17.72 seconds. Mjoka was trailed by Raymond A de Freitas of MP-MP, who finished fifth in the event by producing a time of 1 minute and 19.47 seconds.
Similarly, sixth best place of the event was secured by Valentino Vergotine of WPA-WP, who stayed almost half body length slower from his preceding swimmer with the timing of 1 minute and 20.04 seconds.
Vergotine was trailed by his team-member, Ethan M Paulse, who stayed 1.07 seconds slower and tapped the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 21.11 seconds for seventh position.
The last spot of the race was secured by Avron H Manchest, who ended his sprint with an effort of 1 minute and 21.94 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, the championship will continue for six more days and will conclude on April 22 after the conclusion of all races in Men and Women’s corner.
