Australia has rung in the changes for the third Ashes Test match to be played at the WACA in Perth from the 16th of this month.
The squad for the game includes a new left arm spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Western-Australia-c865 only a year or so ago and is now in a position to make his Test debut in the biggest series of them all.
Beer also featured in a warm-up match against England at the same venue at the start of the current tour. Upon his selection, he conceded that he was pleasantly surprised to get the nod at a time when the Aussies are enduring a woeful run.
Beer has vowed to make the most of his chances against the incredibly strong English batting that has tore apart Aussie attack in two consecutive innings each time crossing the 500-run mark with minimal damage to the wickets column.
"I was a little bit surprised and I don't think it really sank in until I rang my parents and actually blurted it out myself and thought hang on, what's going on here?'" Beer said. "Twelve months ago I probably wasn't a professional cricketer,
that's in all facets, and then WA gave me the opportunity under http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mickey-Arthur-c1969 and they've been really great and backed me and I've enjoyed every minute of it.
While Beer is celebrating his call-up to the Test team there is disappointment for the spinner he has replaced in the squad.
Xavier Doherty was an elated man when he was chosen for the Gabba Test at the start of the series. His introduction to the longest format was not bad either as he claimed 2 wickets in the first English innings. From there on it all came
crashing down for him as he was smashed to all parts of the ground in England’s rearguard action in the second innings.
Things only worsened in the only innings at Adelaide as the tourists amassed 620/5. Doherty had to be content with a solitary wicket in the innings.
Despite his bitter experience, Doherty has expressed the hope that he would be chosen again to represent the national team at the highest level.
"There is probably a little bit of panic there, but it is only a short series," Doherty told the Australian media. “We’ve got to turn it around pretty quickly. In an ideal world, I would have liked a few more chances. You have seen how
many spinners they have used over the last couple of years, so I'm sure the selectors aren't quite sure who the next person is. But I'm sure if I am given another chance, I can certainly make an impact.”
It remains to be seen if Beer gets the nod to play at Perth or not as the Aussies are likely to give Steven Smith a chance in a four-pronged bowling attack. The wicket has not favoured slow bowlers over the years and was called the ‘graveyard
of spinners’ by Shane Warne.
